KATAP is electronic live music
Cut-up, literally means “shred”, “cut in pieces” but the cut-up is above all an artistic and literary style, which took its first steps in the early decades of the twentieth century with the Dadaism movement, then regain strength and expanded among 50s and 60s, during the beat years, especially thanks to the work of William S. Burroughs, eclectic and unconventional American writer that has become a true literature icon.
THE EARLY DAYS
The project is the brainchild of Fabio Di Miero, deus ex machina of Katap.
After various experiments, in 2005 he arrives at Katap first released EP thanks to the label Bustin’Loose (Planet Funk), that produced a 12” vinyl, “My Trip” containing the original version of the track plus two remixes. The album gets a great international feedback.
Initially, the basic sound of Katap was a heavy mixture of punk-rock and electronic sounds.
But the continuous experiment and listenings leave immediately understand what would be the next step.
THE FIRST OFFICIAL ALBUMS
In 2007, the publication of “Antiform” produced by Katap and Nut Label (independent Neapolitan label). The hit of the album, “Notorious Heart” was selected in 2008 by the MEI (“Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti”, Meeting of Independent Labels) as one of the most representative pieces of the Italian independent scene.
The Antiform tour sees them on stage – among others – of the Kaleidoscope Festival, alongside artists like of Apparat and Schneider TM. In 2009 Katap made an opening to Caparezza.
In November 2011, the third work of Katap, “Bullet”, was released (NutLabel / Audioglobe). A really direct record, without any frill.
Compared to Antiform, the disc follows a more elektro-punk style: electric guitars, dirty and unleashed, create some contours we’re used to hear during of live shows. But the electronics, with its synths, remains a vigilant sentinel within the band, creating a sound in which the explosive dancefloor clashes with the fucking rock’n’roll.
Last album saw the contribution of Massimo Cordovani (former Narcolexia) on guitars and moods and of Vinci Acunto for soundtracks; artistic production was managed by Rosario Acunto (Nut Studio).
THE PRESENT DAYS
After a 4-years break from the record scenes, Katap returned with an EP simply entitled “KATAP“, made of five tracks, a comeback to the pure electro sound after the experience of “Bullet”, which turned towards an electro-rock’n’roll instead. In these years of silence Katap made many live and Festival, who have enriched the band and the project, both as musicians and individuals.
Today a new guitarist joined the band, Roberto Niro, to replace Massimiliano Russo (thank you again Max for your “style”!). The electronics diving into a vortex of sounds has reconnected the project to its origin, “Antiform”, in a continuous stream of bits and beats and megaphone voices. Even live shows will follow this dancefloor path.
The “KATAP” EP is own produced by Katap, for the Nut Label; mixed and mastered at Nut Studio, from Rosario Acunto (Emiro), also the artistic producer of “Bullet”.
Ten years after the release of the vinyl 12 “My trip in 2005, we are preparing a new version of the track, to give to all, ergo Achtung !!! This is a fucking work in progress, we’re there and you?
The KATAP project on stage is:
Fabio di Miero (vocals, computer, synth)
